    Water and mechanical watches have always had a complicated relationship. Whether we're caught in the rain, taking a swim, or exploring beneath the surface, knowing how much water our timepiece can handle is essential. The terms waterproof and water-resistant are often used interchangeably, leading to confusion about what a watch is actually designed to withstand.

    Understanding the difference and knowing how to interpret water resistance or waterproof ratings helps us choose the right watch for the activities we enjoy while protecting our investment. We’ll break down what those ratings really mean, explain why waterproof has largely disappeared from modern watchmaking, and share practical tips for keeping your watch water-resistant for a long time.

    What is the Key Difference Between Waterproof vs. Water Resistant Watches?

    The terms waterproof and water-resistant often get used interchangeably. They sound similar, but they mean very different things.

    A waterproof watch suggests that no water can penetrate the case under any condition. But in reality, no watch can guarantee complete protection forever. Gaskets age, seals compress, and everyday wear gradually affects a watch’s capability to keep moisture out. So, in actuality, there are no true waterproof watches.

    Because of this, the watch industry no longer uses the term waterproof to describe modern timepieces.

    Instead, manufacturers use water resistant or, in rare cases, water repellent. This means a watch has been tested to withstand water exposure up to a specific pressure under controlled laboratory conditions. Note that every water-resistant watch has its limits. Those limits depend on its water resistance rating, construction, and the condition of its seals.

    International regulations discourage brands from advertising watches as waterproof because the term implies absolute protection, something no mechanical object can promise over its entire lifespan. Even renowned dive watches from luxury brands like Rolex, Omega, and Tudor are described as water-resistant, despite their exceptional engineering and impressive depth ratings.

    But What About Dive Computers? 

    It's also worth distinguishing a dive watch from a dive computer. While both are designed for underwater use, they serve very different purposes.

     

    A dive watch is a reliable timekeeping instrument with a rotating bezel that helps divers track elapsed time while underwater.

    A dive computer is a specialized electronic device that continuously monitors depth, dive time, ascent rate, and decompression limits. Dive computers, such as those built by Garmin, Suunto, or Shearwater, are built to withstand prolonged underwater use and carry impressive depth ratings of 100 to 200 meters.

    However,  manufacturers still describe them as water-resistant rather than waterproof. Like any sealed device, they depend on gaskets and O-rings that require periodic inspection and maintenance to ensure continued performance.

    What Do Common Water Resistance Ratings Mean?

    We should not think of water resistance ratings as diving depths. Instead, they act as a guide to the kinds of activities a watch is designed to handle under normal conditions.

    The following recommendations reflect how most manufacturers and watchmakers interpret these ratings.

          30 meters (3 ATM / 3 Bar): Protects the watch from splashes

          Designed to handle accidental contact with water, including handwashing, light rain, and occasional splashes.

          Not recommended for swimming, showering, or prolonged exposure to water.

          50 meters (5 ATM / 5 Bar): Suitable for swimming

          Offers additional protection for recreational swimming in pools or calm water.

          Still not intended for snorkeling, high-impact water sports, or scuba diving.

          100 meters (10 ATM / 10 Bar): Suitable for water sports

          A versatile rating for active lifestyles, including swimming, snorkeling, surfing, sailing, and other surface water activities.

          Many sports watches and entry-level dive watches fall into this category.

          200 meters (20 ATM / 20 Bar) and above: Built for diving

          Designed for scuba diving and demanding underwater environments.

          Professional dive watches often feature additional capabilities such as a screw-down crown, unidirectional rotating bezel, and compliance with recognized dive watch standards.

          Models rated 300 meters or more provide an even greater margin of safety for recreational and professional divers.

    Can Water Resistance Wear Out? 

    Yes. Even a well-built luxury timepiece gradually loses its ability to keep water out as seals age and components experience years of use. That’s why regular maintenance is just as important as the original water resistance rating.

    Several factors can affect a watch's ability to resist water over time:

          Gaskets and seals naturally deteriorate.

          Rubber gaskets around the crystal, case back, and crown dry out, compress, and lose their elasticity as they age.

          Once they no longer create a tight seal, moisture can find its way into the case.

          Everyday wear reduces water resistance.

          Repeatedly unscrewing the crown, accidental knocks, and normal wear on the case can compromise the watch's seals.

          Extreme temperatures, saltwater, chlorine, and chemicals from soaps or cleaning products can also accelerate gasket wear.

          A damaged crown or crystal increases the risk of leaks.

          Even a small crack in the crystal or a bent crown stem can create an entry point for water.

          If a screw-down crown isn’t fully secured before water exposure, the watch's water resistance is significantly reduced.

          Regular pressure testing helps ensure continued protection.

          If we frequently swim, dive, or expose our watch to water, it’s smart to have its water resistance tested during routine servicing.

          Watchmakers can perform a pressure test to verify that the case, crown, crystal, and gaskets still provide a proper seal before the watch returns to the water.

    The good news is that water resistance is often restorable. Replacing worn gaskets and performing a proper pressure test during service allows many watches to regain their original level of water resistance, provided the case and other critical components remain in good condition.

    Tips for Keeping Your Watch Water-Resistant

    A water-resistant watch is built to withstand moisture, but it also depends on proper care. A few simple habits can go a long way toward preserving the integrity of its seals.

          Always secure the crown before water exposure.

          Make sure the crown is fully pushed in or screwed down.

          Never adjust the crown or push chronograph pushers while the watch is underwater.

          Avoid hot showers, saunas, and sudden temperature changes.

          High heat can cause gaskets to expand, contract, or deteriorate more quickly.

          Rapid shifts between hot and cold temperatures may also affect the seals over time.

          Rinse your watch after swimming in saltwater or chlorinated pools.

          Salt, chlorine, and other chemicals can gradually damage gaskets and metal components.

          A quick rinse with fresh water then dried with a soft cloth helps remove residue and keeps the case looking its best.

          Have the seals inspected during routine servicing.

          Gaskets are consumable parts that naturally wear out with age.

          Replacing them as needed helps maintain the watch's original water resistance.

          Schedule periodic pressure tests.

          If we regularly swim or dive with our watch, a pressure test every one to two years provides added peace of mind.

          This simple test confirms that the case, crystal, crown, and seals still form a reliable barrier against water.

          Don't assume an older rating still applies.

          A watch that was rated to 100 or 200 meters when new may no longer offer the same level of protection years later if it hasn't been serviced.

          Before taking an older timepiece into the water, have its water resistance professionally checked.

    Is Water-Resistant Is the Standard Today?

    While no watch is truly waterproof, a properly maintained water-resistant watch is more than capable of handling everyday wear—and, depending on its rating, everything from swimming to professional diving. The key is knowing what those ratings actually mean and choosing a watch that matches how we plan to use it.

    Yes, a water-resistant dress watch, sports watch, or a purpose-built dive watch is a great companion. Respecting its water resistance limits and keeping up with routine maintenance ensures it continues to perform reliably for years to come.
